NAU celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Miss Indian NAU Pageant

November brings more than just the first snow to campus. Northern Arizona University is celebrating Native American Heritage Month with various activities planned to commemorate the traditions and culture of indigenous people.

Several events, which highlight accomplishments, contributions and talents, are open to the public, including:

“Moc Mondays”
Nov. 9, 16, 23, 30
Celebrate Native American culture by wearing moccasins or traditional footwear every Monday in November to honor ancestors and indigenous people worldwide.

Indigenous Bash
5-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7
University Union Fieldhouse
Enjoy performances by indigenous dancers, singers and talents including the NAU HAPA Club, Arizona Bird Nation, Aztec Dancers, Byron Nicholai and The Davis Brothers. Navajo tacos will be sold at the Native American Cultural Center during the event.

Global Gathering
4-6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9
Native American Cultural Center Gathering Hall
Join students from the First Year Seminar 121, 131 and Second Year Seminar 241 classes who will be sharing their community service projects and addressing how people can become more involved in indigenous projects.

Miss Indian NAU Pageant
6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13
du Bois Center Ballroom
Celebrate the heritage of Native American women who are vying for the opportunity to represent NAU students as an ambassador in the Miss Indian NAU Pageant.

Sand Painting Workshop
1-2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16
Native American Cultural Center Gathering Hall
Discover the history and origin of Navajo sand painting and create your own while witnessing a live demonstration by alumna and local artist Belinda Ayze. Seating is limited.

NAU Men’s Basketball Game
7-10 p.m. Friday, Nov 20
Window Rock Events Center, Fort Defiance, AZ
Cheer on the Jacks as they take on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at the Beeholdzil Fighting Scouts Event Center. Tickets are $5, with exclusive giveaways to the first 1,500 fans, autographed posters and a unique halftime performance.
