Jazz ensemble to perform standards at church ‘night club’

The NAU Vocal Jazz Ensemble will turn a Flagstaff church into a nightclub—temporarily of course—for an evening of standards by 12 soloists.

Under the direction of Gary Weidenaar the singers will perform solos with a rhythm section beginning at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Rees Hall in the Federated Community Church, 400 W. Aspen. Ave.

Tunes will include Night and DayMack the KnifeLet’s Fall in Love, and I’ve Got the World on a String. The second half of the event will feature quartets and the entire ensemble singing Bill Evans’ tuneWaltz for Debbie and closing with the Latin tune Spain.

There will be snacks and soft drinks during the performance, set in a pseudo night club atmosphere. A $10 donation is suggested.

Tickets are available by calling NAU Choral Studies at (928) 523-2642, Gary Weidenaar at (928) 523-2748 or at the door.
