  • Steven Gehrke, assistant professor in the Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation, along with associate professor Brendan Russo, professor Edward Smaglik, and graduate student Katherine Riffle in the Department of Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and Environmental Engineering, co-authored the article, “Spatial interactions of shared e-scooter trip generation and vulnerable road user crash frequency,” published in the Journal of Transportation Safety & Security. Their study employed spatial econometric modeling techniques to illustrate the need for safer infrastructure to promote the increased adoption of emergent mobility services such as e-scooters.
  • Northern Arizona University received full accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). AAALAC commended the university and “the staff for providing and maintaining a high-quality program of laboratory animal care and use. Especially noteworthy were the appearance of well cared for animals and the attention to their needs.” Special recognition was given to Kimberley Cohen, institutional veterinarian for the Office of Research Compliance; Kathleen Freel, animal care manager for the Office of Research Compliance; and Tad Theimer, professor of biological sciences and chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • The W. A. Franke College of Business’ finance program has been approved as an affiliate of the CFA Institute. The CFA program is an elite designation that can help students in their career goals, as well as provides scholarship opportunities for those in the program.
  • Carol Chambers, professor in the School of Forestry, presented at the Canadian Section and Ontario Chapter of The Wildlife Society Virtual Conference. Her presentation was titled “Being a Wildlife Professional.”
  • Professor Allen Reich of the School of Hotel & Restaurant Management was one of six academics selected from U.S. universities to sit as a voting member at the August meeting of the Conference for Food Protection (CFP). The CFP consists of more than 500 members who work together to form a consensus on the creation and setting of changes to national food code policies for firms that sell food and beverages to the public. Reich’s area of expertise at the CFP focuses on policy creation, education and training, certification programs and the operational implications of proposed policies changes.

  • The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its Preseason National Coaches’ Poll on Tuesday, announcing the NAU men’s team as No. 1 and the Lumberjack women as No. 12 in the NCAA. NAU’s men’s team includes two All-American athletes:
    • Nico Young, fourth place overall in 2021 NCAA Championships
    • Abdihamid Nur, seventh place overall in 2021 NCAA Championships
  • Alumni Justin Sima and Riley Waechter and their mentor, Jeff Rushall, principal lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, recently published a paper in the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology. The paper, “On Constructing Greek Ladders to Approximate any Real Algebraic Number,” was based on undergraduate research completed during their senior year at NAU.
  • Luis Aguilar has been offered a spot on the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl Preseason Big Board. The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl provides senior NFL prospects with a platform to showcase their skills to all 32 NFL teams.
