Northern Arizona University’s School of Music has announced its 2019 Horizons Summer Concert Series lineup. This marks the first time the concert offerings have extended into the summer. The five Sunday afternoon performances will be held in Kitt Recital Hall, offering guests an acoustically vibrant, intimate setting.

“Awakening the Fire”
R. Carlos Nakai & Will Clipman
Grammy-nominees R. Carlos Nakai and Will Clipman delve into a primal sonic odyssey, where the ancient call of the Native American cedar flute and vibration of African, Native American and Asian rhythms intersect.
May 26, 4 p.m.
“Celebrating Miles Davis”
Fred Forney Quintet
This special birthday celebration for Miles Davis, who was born on May 26, 1926, includes music from the albums “Kind of Blue,” “Porgy and Bess,” “ESP,” “Round Midnight,” “Cookin’” and compositions by Miles’s sidemen during the 1950s and early ‘60s.

“The Prince of Instruments”
Ronn McFarlane, lute
Grammy-nominated lutenist Ronn McFarlane performs a combination of Renaissance and Baroque music, Scottish and Irish tunes from the 17th and 18th centuries and his own Celtic- and Americana-inspired lute music.

“In Pursuit of Love”
Gryphon Trio
Canadian ensemble Gryphon Trio—winners of a 2019 Juno Award—pairs monuments of the piano trio repertoire by Beethoven and Ravel with a recently commissioned work by Sri Lanka-born composer Dinuk Wijeratne.

“The Three Bs”
Phoenix Symphony Chamber Players
A trio of trios for winds, strings and piano by J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.
Admission to the Horizons Concert Series is $22.50 for adults and $15 for seniors and NAU faculty and staff. Concerts are free for NAU students with ID and children under 17. Tickets can be purchased online or by phone at (928) 523-5661. Free parking is available in Lot P13.
