Northern Arizona University is truly becoming a “global village” as people from a variety of cultures and ethnic backgrounds unite in the pursuit of education.
To promote diversity within the campus and local communities, the Associated Students of NAU and several other campus organizations are hosting a series of educational events during Unity Week, April 7-12.
“The events at Unity Week are designed to serve as a means by which people can step out of their everyday routines and examine cultures different from their own,” said Otto Hanson, multicultural affairs program director for ASNAU and coordinator of the event.
The week’s activities will include everything from live music and an international fashion show to lectures and workshops on topics regarding diversity on a worldwide and local level.
Hanson said organizing Unity Week with the variety of organizations involved, including the Multicultural Student Center, Residence Life, Student Life and others, is a perfect example of what Unity Week aims to achieve: cross-cultural experience and collaboration.
“As we learn more about the many cultures surrounding us in this world, we will learn to respect our neighbors more wholeheartedly,” Hanson said.
Unity Week activities are free and open to the public. Information and a list of events is online, or contact Hanson at omh2@nau.edu.
