National Hispanic, Latiné Heritage month is celebrated every year from Sept. 15 through Oct.15. This month-long celebration traditionally honors the culture, history and contributions of the Hispanic and Latiné communities.
“I love Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Erik Perez, president of the Latiné Student Union (LSU) at NAU. “It makes me feel like my people get recognized for all the things we bring to this country;, between migrant workers providing all the food at our tables to community leaders that motivate us to shoot for the stars.”
LSU’s mission on campus is to promote, amplify and celebrate the Hispanic and Latiné students by allowing them to come together and embrace unity.
“As a first-generation college student and American, I still feel a deep connection to my roots,” Perez said. “My parents came to this country with nothing and gave me everything. This is a story that many of my friends share. It’s a connection that makes us admire our culture that much more. Hispanic Heritage Month is our time to show off the ‘cultura’ that we are so proud to be a part of!”
Beginning Sept. 15, Northern Arizona University is celebrating Hispanic, Latiné heritage with a variety of events hosted by NAU’s Office of Inclusion (IMQ), Ethnic Studies and other groups. Through these events, NAU strives to honor the culture, history and diversity of individuals in the Latiné community.
