Donate, Don’t Ditch program encourages student participation, benefits Flagstaff community

At the end of each semester, University Housing encourages students to participate in the Donate, Don’t Ditch program.

For more than 25 years, University Housing has teamed up with local community organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Sunshine Rescue Mission, Parents Anonymous and Goodwill to allow on-campus residents to easily donate gently used items. This is an opportunity to benefit the local community, increase sustainability awareness and reduce the number of useful items that end up in landfills. In 2019 alone, residents donated 47,680 pounds of items, with more than 250 tons of items and food donated during the program’s lifetime.

Donation bins are located near the front desk of each residential community during spring move out. A variety of items can be donated, including clothing, books, furniture, mirrors, electronics, cleaning supplies (even partially used) and non-perishable food items still in date. Items not accepted include broken or heavily-worn items, egg crate or foam mattress toppers, hangers, tube TVs and futon mattresses.

If you are uncertain about an item, ask before you ditch! Questions about donation items should be directed to University Housing by calling (928) 523-3978 or by emailing university.housing@nau.edu.
