Honor the life and civil rights work of Martin Luther King Jr. during Northern Arizona University’s annual MLK march and celebration Monday, Jan. 16.
While the university will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday, a number of activities have been planned through NAU’s Civic Service Institute to encourage volunteerism and community involvement.

Highlights include a march that will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the University Union by the Office of Student Life. Participants will head south on the pedway to the du Bois Center Ballroom for a student-run program featuring a volunteer fair, awards, speeches, voter registration and more.
Commemorative events honoring MLK continue on Tuesday, Jan. 17, with a play called The Meeting that begins at 7 p.m. in the du Bois Center Ballroom. The play depicts a fictional debate between King and Malcom X about the era’s civil rights struggle. A 15-minute question-and-answer session with the actors will follow.
A philosophy discussion will take place after the play at 8 p.m. in SBS West (building 70), room 103, where participants will be invited to address topics related to King’s nonviolent approach, issues raised during the play, and why they are still relevant.
