Patty Limerick—an expert on the American West—will speak at Northern Arizona University about learning from history to ensure a sustainable future.

Limerick’s presentation, “The Western Advantage: Celebrating Arizona and Colorado as Laboratories for Applied History,” is from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Liberal Arts room 120. The event is free and open to the public.

The lecture is aimed at bridging the gap between academic and public discourse and explores the benefits of applying historical perspectives to contemporary dilemmas and conflicts. Through a mix of anecdotes, historical facts and engagement with policies and practices, Limerick helps audiences understand the historical origins of some of the West’s challenges and their continued impact on cultural and management decisions.

She served as the Colorado State Historian from 2016 to 2018 and was appointed to the National Endowment for the Humanities advisory board. Additionally, she served as president of the American Studies Association, the Western History Association, the Society of American Historians, the Organization of American Historians and as vice president for teaching of the American Historical Association.

The College of Arts and Letters, Center for Ecosystem Science and Society and Department of English are sponsoring the event along with the Arizona Humanities Foundation.
