Author David Levithan discusses his book Every Day. |
Change is the only constant for the protagonist in Every Day, this year’s NAUreads selection for all first-year students.
The main character is aptly named A, a self-chosen moniker that reflects both the simplicity and complexity of an unusual existence. Each morning, A wakes up in a different person’s body. Within moments, A learns the name of the girl or boy whose body is inhabited and begins to feel what it is like to be them—navigating relationships with family, dealing with depression, staving off hunger or healing from physical or emotional wounds.
After 16 years of this existence, A is steadfast in not interfering in or altering a person’s life during this borrowed time. But when A becomes Justin for the day and falls in love with Justin’s girlfriend Rhiannon, A decides to do anything to maintain a connection with her. Challenges arise related to social norms including gender identity and roles, body image and how we view romantic love.
Levithan will discuss Every Day at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at Ardrey Auditiorium. Tickets are free and will be available to the public beginning Sept. 9 through the NAU Central Ticket Office.
All first-year students receive a free copy of the book during orientation to foster conversation and involvement. Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in book club and class discussions as well as a film series that shares central themes and issues.
