Honor the life and civil rights work of Martin Luther King, Jr. during Northern Arizona University’s 22nd annual MLK march and celebration Jan. 19.
The march will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the University Union information desk and will head to the du Bois Center Ballroom for a student-run program featuring guest speaker James Carter, an interventional cardiologist at Flagstaff Medical Center.
There will be music, skits, poetry and a presentation about other leaders in the civil rights movement, followed by a reception.
This year’s theme “Once a dream, now a reality” differs from past themes in that it also reflects the historic milestone of Barack Obama being elected the first black president of the United States.
“This year the MLK celebration is not only a celebration of a brilliant man from the past, but a celebration of a brilliant man in our present and future. It’s also a realization that the ‘Dream’ is coming to fruition,” said Tadzia Dennis-Jackson, a program coordinator for NAU’s Multicultural Student Center.
The public is invited to these free events, and it is requested that all participants bring a non-perishable food item to help replenish the Flagstaff food banks that are low after the holiday season.
