Lecture to examine the ‘public truth’ of torture

Sherene Razack, professor of sociology and equity studies at the University of Toronto, will deliver a public lecture, titled “The Manufacture of Torture as a Public Truth,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in room 104 of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, bldg. 65.

Razack will discuss the case of Omar Khadr, a 15-year-old boy who was detained and tortured at Guantanamo Bay. Razack asserts the public reaction to videotapes of the torture, which failed to elicit concern in Canada, relates to the indifference of a “racialized” nationalism.
