  • Jesse Brookins, who graduated last week, won a Sustainable Building Program award from Coconino County for his poster, “From Trash to Treasure,” outlining a proposal to use recycled plastic to make low-cost housing materials. The project is designed to replace cinderblock and tin-roof dwellings in South African townships and poor communities in the United States. Brookins will receive $300 and free consultations for his project.
  • NAU’s team recently won the public pitch portion of the Collegiate Wind Competition. The competition required teams to design, build and test a wind turbine, conduct market research and develop a business plan. NAU was among 12 schools invited to participate in the competition, including Pennsylvania State University, Virginia Tech and James Madison University. The team consisted of students studying business, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering: Jordan Parker, Diana Carlson, Tyler Brown, Shawn Malkou, Alana Benson, Anthony Cheslic, Leo Segura De Niz, Craig Collins, Mitchell Green, Michael Vogelsang, Alex Dahlmann, Kory Joe, Soud Alsahli, Evan Heiland, Qian Zha, Aaron Deluca, Devon Hardy, Tristan Scott, Spencer McHanon, Dakota Sallaway, Jacob Peterson, Benjamin Macleod and Yousef Alali.
