The Arizona Board of Regents on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution that addresses violent or threatening conduct in the university system. The motion was passed during the regularly scheduled meeting held this week at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
The resolution requires any university system employee to immediately report violent or threatening conduct to law enforcement.
“In the wake of events involving allegations of abuse and violence at other higher education institutions in our country, we are mindful to reaffirm and remind everyone that the Arizona University System has a zero-tolerance policy toward any acts of intimidation, harassment, threats or violence,” said Regent Dennis DeConcini, who offered the resolution.
Northern Arizona University President John Haeger recently sent a letter to faculty, staff and students reiterating university policies that ensure a safe learning and working environment.
The regents also received reports on financial aid, enterprise initiative metrics and audits for each of the universities. Regent Anne Mariucci commended all three universities for clean audits and noted NAU’s careful planning for reserve funds.
Rebecca Gau, director of the Governor’s Office of Education Innovation, attended the meeting to present Gov. Jan Brewer’s Education Reform Plan.
This was the final meeting for regents Ernest Calderón, Fred DuVal and Robert McLendon. All three regents’ terms are set to end Dec. 31. Gov. Brewer appointed Jay Heiler of Phoenix to replace DuVal. The governor is expected to appoint two new regents in the coming weeks.
The next regents’ meeting is scheduled for Feb. 16 and 17 at Arizona State University in Tempe.
