Northern Arizona University President John Haeger has been elected to the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment Steering Committee for 2011-12.
Already a charter signatory of the group, Haeger has committed the university to addressing climate, social, economic and environmental sustainability.
“Northern Arizona University teaches sustainable practices, educates our future climate scientists, conducts vital scientific research and builds sustainably with the future impact in mind,” Haeger said. “The example we set is reflected in this election, and I am honored to deepen our commitment and my involvement in the effort to do what we can for the climate.”
A Climate Leadership Summit will be held Oct. 12-13 in Denver. The summit will feature former CIA director James Woolsey as the keynote speaker who will discuss the national security implications of climate disruption and how it affects water, food and strategic resources availability.
Formed in late 2006, the goal of the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment is for colleges and universities to model ways to minimize global warming emissions and to provide knowledge and the educated graduates needed to minimize or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.
