Disability Support Services has changed its name to better reflect its mission of providing equal access to all students.
The Office of Disability Resources acts as a consultant to assist in building a campus that works toward universal design, which focuses on an environment that enhances the independence of all users, whether or not they are working with Disability Resources.
The universal design concept also creates a sustainable environment that reduces the need for individual accommodation. For example, automatic door openers on campus work for everyone, from a wheelchair user to the instructor with a handful of books to the mother with stroller or the UPS delivery person.
“Universal design acknowledges that access is an institutional commitment,” said Jane Mulrooney, director of Disability Resources. “It moves away from the idea that the Office of Disability Resources has the sole responsibility for making the campus accessible.”
The Office of Disability Resources is located in the Ponderosa Building, number 92, on the corner of Riordan and Riordan Ranch Road. Call (928) 523-8773 for information or training.
