Measles cases have recently been identified in 36 U.S. states, including Arizona. Measles is a highly contagious airborne disease that spreads through coughing, sneezing or being in close proximity to an infected individual. Given how quickly it can spread, especially in a college environment, and how severe measles can be, it is important that everyone at NAU takes precautions.
This includes:
- Making sure you’re up to date on your measles vaccine (MMR). If you’re not sure or need a booster, contact Campus Health Services.
- If you’re symptomatic, stay home. Symptoms of measles, which typically appear a week or more after exposure, include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes and pink eye. Spots and rash typically develop a few days after the initial symptoms.
- If you are experiencing symptoms of measles, please seek medical attention. Contact your health care provider or visit the Campus Health Services website to access services or for more information.
Please also be aware that NAU has a policy regarding measles, mumps and rubella immunity due to the severity of these diseases.
