UPDATED: McConnell Drive closing July 8, plan for alternative route to access NAU’s south campus

June 25, 2019

McConnell Drive will be closed to two-way vehicle traffic starting July 8 as Arizona Department of Transportation crews begin work on the I-17 bridge.

The street, which serves as the main entrance to NAU’s south campus, is scheduled to be closed through Aug. 18; ADOT plans to open the street to traffic the Monday before residence hall move-in. McConnell Drive on NAU campus will be open, but there will be no access to Beulah Boulevard from campus. Those who travel from that area of town should take University Drive.

The I-17 freeway exit will be closed during this time as well. Motorists should pay extra attention to road signs on related closures in this area.

Pedestrian travel on the urban trail will be accommodated as much as possible during the closure; pedestrians should expect limited delays because of construction activities. Flaggers will control pedestrian movements.

NAIPTA will reroute the Route 10 bus, which will not be stopping at stops 6, 15, 7 and 14 (Campus Heights and SBS). Route 10 will have a temporary stop at the University and Knoles intersection and will take University Drive out to Milton. NAU buses will maintain their regular stops at these locations.

Departments that are hosting summer camps, orientation activities and other events should ensure visitors to campus are made aware of the closures and the suggested detours.
