Large prescribed burn planned for Coconino National Forest

There is a large prescribed burn scheduled for Wednesday through Friday in the Coconino National Forest. This burn has been in the planning stages for four years. As with other prescribed burns in the region, conditions are favorable, thus allowing crews to remove hazardous “dead and down” fuels and help mitigate the risk of wildfire. Due to the size and location of this project, smoke likely will be highly visible in and around Flagstaff.

  • Name: Crater Sinks RX Project
  • Size: 4,500 acres
  • Smoke impacts: Southwest winds are expected to carry smoke to the northeast over Flagstaff.  Additional smoke impacts are expected in Oak Creek Canyon, Kachina Village, Doney Park, Timberline and nearby neighborhoods. Air quality will likely degrade as smoke settles in the area.  For air quality information, please visit www.airnow.gov.
  • Location: 10 miles southwest of Flagstaff (GPS: 35°04’58.8″N 111°47’24.0″W) on federal and state lands
