John Michael Mullen, former NAU administrator

John Michael Mullen, a former vice president of finance at Northern Arizona University, died April 9, 2009, in Richmond, Va. He was 66.

Dr. Mullen earned a master’s degree in business administration from West Virginia University. He taught college finance, served as a community college provost and earned a doctorate in higher education from the University of Virginia.

From 1974 to 1998, Dr. Mullen worked closely with Virginia’s university and community college boards and presidents while at the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, the state’s coordinating body for all higher education in Virginia.

In 1998, Dr. Mullen came to NAU where he served as the vice president of finance for three years. In 2001 he became chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission until 2005.

More recently, Dr. Mullen was the chief finance officer at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs, where he oversaw the finances and administrative operations of the center until the end of 2008.

In addition to his wife, Andrea Hopkins Mullen, survivors include three daughters, Kelley L. Williamson, Heather Dawn Mullen and Shannon R. MacNamara; and four grandchildren.
