ITS gives support to Thunderbird e-mail program

Information Technology Services has added Mozilla Thunderbird as a supported e-mail program. NAU users can download the current version of Thunderbird from www.nau.edu/its/software.

Thunderbird is available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.

ITS decided to add Thunderbird to its list of supported e-mail programs—the others are Eudora, Outlook, Webmail and Portal Mail—after comparing it against two other e-mail programs. Dina Barnese, PC Support Team lead, put together a campuswide committee to evaluate the three programs, and Thunderbird came out on top. The three were tested on 30 different features.

Barnese said the version available at the ITS web site has been set up especially for NAU users. “It is preconfigured to work with NAU’s e-mail servers,” she said. “We’re trying to make it as easy as possible for people to install and use it.”

Thunderbird has spam and virus protection in addition to the protection found on the ITS servers.

If you need help getting up to speed with Thunderbird, the Information Systems Technology Training group will be offering free training. Information is available at www.nau.edu/its/istt.
