  • Liz Grobsmith, provost and vice president for academic affairs, was selected to receive a 2012 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. The award recognizes individuals or teams who have made outstanding contributions to furthering international education. The award will be presented to Grobsmith during the organization’s Commission on International Programs meeting in July in Mystic, Conn.
  • David Camacho, associate vice president for diversity, received an “Advocates in Education” award from the Victoria Foundation. Camacho was honored for his contributions to advancing equal education and diversity in Arizona.
  • Mandy Hansen, director of International Admissions and associate director for the Center for International Education, along with Jacob Eavis, International Admissions counselor, presented a poster session, titled “Seal the Deal: Student Engagement after Admission,” at the annual NAFSA Conference and Expo in Houston, Texas.
  • Nancy R. Riggs, professor in the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, co-edited Mineralogical and Geochemical Approaches to Provenance, a new book from The Geological Society of America. An abstract is available here.
  • Wally Covington, Regents’ Professor and executive director for NAU’s Ecological Restoration Institute, was among 21 people named to a federal advisory committee charged with providing guidance and recommendations on the implementation of the new U.S. Forest Service Planning Rule. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said committee members will give unique perspectives on land management issues under the new planning rule, which provides stronger protections for forests, water and wildlife while supporting the economic vitality of rural communities. More than 220 people applied to serve on the committee. Covington was the only individual on the committee selected to represent the scientific community.
