If you dream of going abroad and learning about different cultures, there is a program that can help make it a reality. The Global Citizens Project Scholars is an NAU Education Abroad program that, in collaboration with the Honors College and the Economic Policy Institute, provides undergraduate students the opportunity to study abroad for just $900.
Angelina Palumbo, director of education abroad, said that students interested in applying for the program this year will need to take one course online during Spring 2026 to prepare them for their time abroad, where they will learn about global citizenship, rural communities, language and culture and responsible volunteerism and service.
“Service to the community is an essential part of this program,” Palumbo said. “Students go to these countries and participate in projects that help these communities. They help them and learn from them; it’s a reciprocal approach. They need to be prepared to do intense work and submit a final project at the end of their study abroad experience to wrap up the program.”
The main difference between the Global Citizens Project and a regular study abroad experience is that the program is almost fully subsidized, providing an opportunity for students who want to travel abroad but can’t afford it. The students selected for the program don’t need to pay for their passports and visas. Even their flight is included in the $900 fee.
“It is designed for students who have never left the United States,” said Palumbo. “Eligibility includes being a full time Honors or Honors eligible student, with a minimum 3.3 GPA, demonstrated financial need through Pell Grant eligibility or through another justification and they need to have completed at least two semesters at NAU.”
The goal of the Global Citizen Project Scholars, which won the IIE Heiskel Award in 2024, is to make international education economically accessible to all students, providing a multidisciplinary learning experience for those who would not have this opportunity otherwise.
“Studying abroad has a great impact on students’ lives,” said Palumbo. “It is an opportunity to see the world and discover different cultures. It will be something students will remember as an adventure for the rest of their life.”
Although location preferences are not guaranteed, students can choose to travel to Ecuador, Italy or Vietnam for seven to 10 days, where they will take part in a community project that will put their knowledge and abilities to work. Students can apply for the program beginning April 1. Applications will close on Nov. 2 and applicants will be notified if they have been selected by Nov. 17.
“This is a great opportunity for students to not only gain a richer understanding of their major and opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom but also help build their resume to enhance their career after they graduate,” Palumbo said. “Getting to help others, make memories and learn about new places is just a bonus.
