Dr. Calvin E. James, former dean of Applied Science and Technology at Northern Arizona University, died Dec. 29, 2009, at the Olivia White Hospice Home. He was 83.

Dr. James was born July 1, 1926, to Cyrus and Thelma James.

In addition to being a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in Okinawa, Dr. James was a professor of higher education. He was president of Yavapai Community College from 1972-1974 before coming to Flagstaff to be dean of Applied Science and Technology. He was a member of Epsilon Pi Tau, an honor society for technology professions.

Dr. James enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and fixing and restoring old cars. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; six children Peter (Sandy) James, Mike James, Tim James, Beth (Robert) Bogs, Sarah (Chuck) LaRue and Andrew James; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dr. James was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the Citizens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and School, 2605 N. Fort Valley Road, Flagstaff, AZ 86001-8312.
