What to know about ADOT’s I-17 Improvement Project

Nighttime closures along I-17 near Sunset Point will occur over the next several months as the Arizona Department of Transportation conducts controlled blasts as part of a project to widen the freeway.

The closures will take place overnight Monday through Thursday; they started Nov. 30 and will continue until the work is completed. This will affect travel between Sunset Point (mile marker 252) and Black Canyon City (mile marker 242). According to ADOT, the freeway will be narrowed to one lane starting at 7 p.m. and be fully closed beginning at 10 p.m. This will occur in both directions.

Travelers should expect backups of approximately two miles and delays of about an hour. Travelers are encouraged to find alternate routes or avoid traveling on I-17 during the affected hours.

There will not be daytime or weekend closures related to this work.

This work is part of the project to expand I-17. The work will result in an additional travel lane in each direction for 15 miles from Anthem to Black Canyon City and eight miles of flex lanes between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. Ten bridges will be widened, and two will be replaced as well. The project is expected to be completed by 2025.
