Northern Arizona University President John D. Haeger recently participated in a round-table discussion on the challenges of reclaiming the public trust in higher education.
The discussion was part of a conference sponsored by the American Council on Education in January in Washington, D.C.
The discussion featured a dozen other university system leaders, including Charles B Reed, chancellor of the California State University System, and William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland.
Topics for the discussion, titled “Recapturing Public Confidence in Higher Education: The Leadership Challenges of Accountability, Institutional Performance and the Marketplace,” included resolving tensions among market demands, academic preferences and public policy priorities.
The conversations will result in brief working papers for higher education professionals.
