For the second year in a row, the U.S. State Department recognized NAU as a 2023 Fulbright HSI Leader for its efforts in supporting U.S. and international students and faculty who benefit from participation in a variety of Fulbright opportunities.
The distinction among Hispanic-Serving Institutes, announced Monday at the annual conference of Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities in Chicago, recognizes the engagement NAU has achieved with Fulbright exchange participants in the 2022-23 academic year, as well as promoting Fulbright opportunities on campus. Every year, the Fulbright Program funds research and teaching opportunities for NAU faculty, graduate students and alumni at universities throughout the world and brings international students and faculty to NAU to continue their work.
Ensuring all students have access to a variety of high-impact educational opportunities, including study, research and service abroad, is a critical part of NAU’s mission to prepare students for success in their lives and careers post-graduation. In addition, many NAU faculty are committed to international scholarly efforts. Fulbright is an important partner on both fronts, providing valuable opportunities for students and faculty and broadening connections to partner institutions throughout the world.
“This recognition by the U.S. State Department reflects both NAU’s impact as an HSI and our community’s commitment to learn and engage locally and globally,” NAU President José Luis Cruz Rivera said. “Our participation in Fulbright activities has strengthened student learning, faculty scholarship and institutional partnerships, and I am proud to see how engaged our Lumberjacks are in participating in impactful international programs.”

On Nov. 9, the U.S. Department of State will host a virtual workshop featuring representatives from Fulbright HSI Leaders to share best practices to engage and support students and faculty, increase the global footprint on campus through the Fulbright Program, host international Fulbright students and scholars and build international networks. This event is open to the public and is specifically designed for faculty, staff and stakeholders at HSIs.
“Representation matters and pairing the world-class educational opportunities that Hispanic-Serving Institutions provide with the power of Fulbright further enriches the experience and educational opportunities for students and scholars both at home and abroad,” said Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Lee Satterfield.
