Northern Arizona University’s Civic Service Institute (CSI) will hold its annual Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor those individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terror attacks that took place in New York City, Washington and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001. On this day, Americans across the country are called to volunteer in their local communities in tribute to the individuals lost and injured in the attacks, first responders and the many who have risen in service to defend freedom.
This event emphasizes remembrance through a flag memorial field to commemorate the lives lost. Due to COVID-19, this is a closed event, with setup and takedown facilitated by volunteers from the Civic Service Institute. CSI staff and volunteers will place 2,997 flags, each representing a victim of the attack, on the Flagstaff City Hall lawn to be on display for the day. The public is invited to visit and reflect while continuing to maintain proper physical distancing.
The service component of this event is a supply drive to support Indigenous communities that have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. CSI will host a supply drive in collaboration with northern Arizona veteran partner organizations. Requested supplies include non-perishable food, bottled water, cleaning and hygiene supplies and dry goods. Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 19 at W. F. Killip Elementary School, 2300 E 6th Ave. Contact Ramsay Shannon, CSI program coordinator, at ramsay.shannon@nau.edu for more information or to schedule a donation pickup.
The Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is one of the largest volunteer days of the year, observed by more than 35 million Americans as a time to give back to the community. CSI is a community volunteering organization with a goal of enriching the lives of the community through service.
