- Graduate student Daniel Begay was recently featured on NPR’s Morning Edition for his juniper ash research. When used in a traditional Navajo cooking method, Begay discovered juniper ash is a good source of calcium. He took many samples of juniper ash and found that not only does one gram of the ash have about the same amount of calcium as a glass of milk, but also the body absorbs the juniper ash easier than dairy products, particularly since many Native Americans are lactose-intolerant.
