- NAU received a score of 4.5 out of five stars from Campus Pride Index for being an LGBTQ-friendly campus. Rankings are based on how each factor contributing to LGBTQ-friendliness, such as policy inclusion and student life, is met and how the university contributes to a more inclusive and respectful campus climate.
- Julie Mueller, associate professor at the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability and the W. A. Franke College of Business, is the principal investigator for a $53,000 grant titled, “Economic Valuation of Watershed Restoration: A Focus on Willingness to Pay for Project Attributes.” The grant is part of a cooperative agreement between NAU and the Salt River Project led by Ben Ruddell of SICCS and Tom Acker of Mechanical Engineering.
- Allen Reich of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management and his son, Joseph Reich, a student at Basis High School, presented a paper at the annual International Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Educators conference in July. “Understanding and Minimizing Bias in the Measurement and Assessment of Qualitative Departmental Performance in Hospitality Firms: An exploratory study of prescriptive research and the practices of excellent firms” examines the possible causes of bias, how it affects a firm and offers strategies for limiting its impact.
- Frank Scott, director of the piano program at the School of Music, was honored by the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) as a foundation fellow for his 40 years of teaching and performing in the School of Music at NAU. Four of Scott’s bachelor of music piano performance majors traveled to Baltimore to attend the MTNA National Convention in March and witness the ceremony: Andrea Luque, Khalid McGhee, Mikayla Rogers, and Rebecca Prizznick.
- Eric Yordy, associate professor of business law at the W. A. Franke College of Business, became vice president of international organization at the annual conference of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business. He also serves as the director of accreditation for FCB, and he participated on a panel to discuss AACSB accreditation and presented a pedagogical paper entitled, “The Gift of the Confidential Settlement in Teaching Legal Environment: Case Studies to Make Students Think.”
- NAU’s Arizona Gear Up program was mentioned in Expect More Arizona’s article “Students Getting a Leg Up on College Thanks to Arizona GEAR UP.” This project helps seventh-grade students in high-needs school districts to prepare for college and a career by providing them with support for the next six years.
- Sodexo is receiving the 2017 Business Partnership of the Year Award for providing food to homeless veterans in Flagstaff and Phoenix during their Stand Down events. This award is given annually to a business that works in partnership with a nonprofit community to further the goal of ending homelessness. NAU collaborates with Sodexo to limit food waste from campus dining and establishing systems of sustainability.
