- Bill Wiist, professor in the College of Health and Human Services, reviewed the book Born With a Junk Food Deficiency: How Flaks, Quacks and Hacks Pimp the Public Health by Martha Rosenberg for PLOS Medicine Journal. Wiist’s review, written in response to an invitation by the publication’s editors, is titled “Risking the Public’s Health, Exposing the Hidden Practices of Big Pharma and Big Food.” The review is in the publication’s “Speaking of Medicine” blog, a new feature in the journal. - R. Dawn Hawley and Alan Lew, professors in the Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation, and Amy Hughes, librarian at Cline Library, organized and presented a session, titled “Food Planning for Healthy and Sustainable Communities,” at the Arizona Planning Association annual meeting last month in Flagstaff.Lew also delivered a keynote presentation, titled “Community-Based Tourism in Natural Areas: Sustainability, Life Cycles and Resilience,” at the Taiwan Outdoor Recreation Studies Conference on Oct. 5 at National Dong Hwa University in Hualien, Taiwan. Lew also gave a presentation to students and faculty on “Sustainability and Resilient Tourism: Malaysia and Taiwan” on Oct. 8 at National Formosa University in Yunlin, Taiwan.
- Lori Poloni-Staudinger, associate professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs, was nominated by the Fulbright Commission to be a U.S. Scholar peer reviewer for the Austria regional review. She will serve a term from 2012-14 and travel to Washington, D.C., annually to evaluate and nominate scholars for Fulbright awards.
- P.H.C. Marchesi, a lecturer in the English Department, received three awards from the 2012 Children’s Literary Classics competition for her book Shelby and Shauna Kitt and the Dimensional Holes. The novel won Best First Chapter and was a Gold Award Recipient in the categories Fantasy Preteen and Science Fiction Preteen. A full list of award winners is available here.

- Gene Balzer, professor emeritus of photography, and Russ Gilbert, instructor of photography and photography lab manager for the School of Communication, conducted a workshop for Mesa Verde National Park. The workshop was designed to help photographers gain a better understanding of composition, computer adjustments and how to photograph ancestral pueblo dwellings. - Karen Pedersen, associate vice president for NAU-Extended Campuses, and Debbie J. Nogueras, associate professor in the School of Nursing, presented at the 18th Annual Sloan Consortium International Conference on Online Learning Oct. 10-12 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. In a pre-conference workshop, Pedersen participated in a panel on “Using the Sloan-C Quality Scorecard for the Administration of Online Programs.”Pedersen also participated in the “Online Military Learners: What is ‘Military Friendly’?” session. Norgueras presented “Bridging the Generations: Civility in Online Education.”
- The Sustainable Communities Program’s compost pilot study kicked off in May and has already composted more than 85,000 pounds, resulting in more than 70,000 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent reduction.The program is hosting a community tour from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.
