- Jennifer Cordoza, an undergraduate international affairs major, is among 161 students nationwide to be awarded a 2013 David L. Boren Scholarship, sponsored by the National Security Education Program. The program provides U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to the nation’s future security and stability. Cordoza already has spent two semesters in South Korea—one of which was as a Gilman International Scholar—and participated in a congressional internship for the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Boren award recipients receive up to $20,000 toward their studies and agree to work in the federal government for a period of at least one year.
- Laura Umphrey, associate professor in the School of Communication, published a co-authored article with Patricia Pizzano, a former graduate student in the applied communication program, and John Sherblom from the University of Maine, titled “Being Secure Means Being Willing to Say You’re Sorry: Attachment Style and the Communication of Relational Dissatisfaction and Disengagement,” in the Journal of Relationships Research.
- Angelina Castagno, associate professor of educational leadership, was elected as member-at-large for the executive board of the Council on Anthropology and Education. The three-year term begins in November at the annual American Anthropological Association meeting.
