Former U.S. Sen. Dennis DeConcini, a member of the Arizona Board of Regents, will celebrate the publication of his political memoir, Senator Dennis DeConcini: From the Center of the Aisle, with a book-signing and reception from 3 to 5:30 p.m. March 2 in the University Union Havasupai Room on the NAU campus.
The event is open to the public and is being hosted by NAU President John Haeger and Ernest Calderón, treasurer on the Arizona Board of Regents.
Gov. Janet Napolitano, who appointed DeConcini to serve as a member of the Arizona Board of Regents in 2006, called the new memoir “a fascinating account of the life and time of one of Arizona’s most distinguished leaders.” It’s a “must-read for anyone interested in the U.S. Senate or the state of Arizona,” she said.
A contemporary of Arizona greats like Sandra Day O’Connor, Barry Goldwater and Rose Mofford, DeConcini is an Arizona icon in his own right. His memoir chronicles his political experiences in his rise from Pima County attorney to U.S. senator.
DeConcini represented Arizona in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 1995 and is perhaps best remembered for sponsoring the critical amendment to the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977 that would return control of the canal to Panama by the year 2000.
During his tenure, DeConcini also served on the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Select Intelligence Committee, and he chaired the Helsinki Commission.
The new memoir, which DeConcini co-authored with Jack L. August Jr., executive director of the Arizona Historical Foundation, provides readers with insights into the inner workings and colorful characters of Arizona politics and the U.S. Senate while giving relevant insights into today’s political climate.
