Students with beautiful voices from around the state and southern Utah are coming to sing on campus this week.
NAU is hosting the annual Arizona National Association of Teachers Singing Student Auditions on Friday and Saturday.
Two hundred and eighty-five students, from high school to doctoral candidates, will sing to compete for awards, prizes and the chance to sing in a recital for first-place winners.
The competition is 12:30 – 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in NAU’s Performing Arts building and includes 21 singing categories. Students will compete simultaneously in different areas. The public is welcome.
An awards ceremony and winners’ recital is 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in Ardrey Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.
“Hundreds of promising, classically trained young singers, along with their teachers, will participate in the event,” said Deborah Raymond, an assistant professor of voice and co-chair of the event. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the students, not only because they will hear their peers sing, but they will also receive expert critiques from leading voice teachers throughout this region.”
The National Association of Teachers of Singing, also known as NATS, was founded in 1944 and is the largest association of teachers of singing in the world with more than 6,500 members.
