Northern Arizona University is ending its practice of storing personal weapons for on-campus students.
Letters have been sent to owners of any weapons currently in storage advising them to retrieve their weapons by Sept. 1. Letters also were sent to students who used the storage facility last year.
Students will be required to leave weapons at their permanent homes or find off-campus storage. NAU’s new practice is in line with Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.
“We are now sending a clear consistent message from both Student Affairs and the police regarding weapons within the educational environment,” said Kathe Shinham, vice president for Administration and Finance.
NAU’s Student Code of Conduct prohibits weapons on campus, including in vehicles, residence halls and academic buildings.
After Sept. 1, any remaining weapons will be managed according to Property Surplus guidelines and Arizona Revised Statutes.
