NAU sophomores praised 187 faculty or staff members for having positively influenced their experience at NAU, according to an annual online survey conducted by NAU’s Planning, Budget and Institutional Research department.
Three faculty and two staff members were more frequently cited: Matthew Fahy, mathematics and statistics; Troy Hutchings and Kathleen Carpenter, College of Education student services; John Wettaw, chemistry and biochemistry; and Sylvester Allred, biological sciences.
A number of other individuals were cited more than once, and the following 26 individuals have been named by at least one student all three years this study has been conducted.

Students gave high praise for those faculty and staff they considered approachable, caring, dedicated and excited about their subject matter.
One student said Fahy “inspired me through his teaching to be the best that I could be in all of my classes.”
Another student said Hutchings “made me realize the amazing experiences a person can have through helping children learn.”
Many faculty and staff were recognized for providing career advice and being positive role models. Several students credited a faculty or staff member for assisting them with finding solutions to personal problems that allowed them to stay in school.
PAIR conducts the survey every year to report accountability data to the Arizona Board of Regents, which asks for data on a variety of student experiences and opinions. This is the third year the survey was conducted online.
