- Two School of Forestry graduate students recently were awarded grants by the National Science Foundation. Larissa Yocom received $11,283 toward her doctoral dissertation enhancement project, “Exploring Climatic and Human Drivers of Fire Regime in a High-Elevation Mexican Forest.” Valerie Kurth—through Catherine Gehring, associate professor of biology—received a $14,040 doctoral dissertation improvement grant for “Controls on Post-Wildfire Carbon Accumulation and Release Patterns.”
- Several students who participated in NAU’s college outreach programs within Educational Support Services were awarded funding and other support to begin their college careers at NAU this fall. Renae Byakeddy, Mercedes Seschillie and Kaydee Williams—all participants of the Educational Talent Search program—each received $6,000 per year over four years from the Arizona College Scholarship Foundation. Byakeddy and Seschillie, who also participated in the Four Corners Upward Bound Math and Science program, also were named Gates Millennium Scholars, along with other Educational Talent Search participants Robin Ellsworth and Tammy Trijillo.
