Northern Arizona University Regents’ Professor Bruce Hungate, director of the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society (Ecoss) and the Frances B. McAllister Endowed Chair in Community, Culture, and Environment, was recently appointed vice chair of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Committee (BERAC).
The members of BERAC provide advice to the DOE’s Director of the Office of Science on the many complex scientific and technical issues that arise in the development and implementation of the agency’s $700 million Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program. BER advances world-class biological and environmental research programs and scientific user facilities to support DOE’s energy, environment and basic research missions.
“The inspiring science at BER covers molecules to the globe, from microbes to the climate system,” Hungate said. “I look forward to this new role, where I get to hear about all of it and help imagine what’s next.”
