Today, Northern Arizona University launched a new partnership with Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network, to offer a car-sharing program on the Flagstaff mountain campus. The service gives students the freedom to get off campus without the hassle of owning a car while also allowing NAU to meet sustainability goals by reducing the need for personal vehicles and parking spots on campus.
The convenient, self-service transportation option is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older, and members of the local community ages 21 and older. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days.
Two vehicles are now available near the University Union in P16A and near the International Pavilion in P32B. The Zipcars have designated parking spots for convenient pick-up and return.
Students who join report an increased quality of life with greater accessibility, according to a first-of-its-kind academic study by UC Berkeley.
NAU students, faculty and staff can join for $15, with rates starting as low as $7.50 per hour and $69 per day. After the first year, members will pay an annual membership fee of $25. Gas, maintenance, insurance and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in Zipcar rates. Students can join online and make reservations either on the Zipcar website or mobile app.
“Sustainability is an important part of NAU’s mission, and we believe this partnership with Zipcar, which will allow freedom of movement while reducing the need for students to own a car, helps move that mission forward,” Erin Stam said. “We are excited to be a part of this movement.”
NAU students can now zip to the grocery store, to a doctor’s appointment or to an internship. And international students can enjoy peace-of-mind with an easy way to get around the U.S.
“We’re excited to team up with Northern Arizona University to bring Zipcar’s convenient, on-demand transportation service to campus,” said Dan Cohen, Zipcar senior marketing manager. “Zipcar offers all the benefits of owning a car without that come along with it, like circling for a parking spot before class, paying for gas or worrying about oil changes.”
