    Undergraduate student Jaylyn Diaz and graduate student Nathanael Barker were awarded the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship for Spring 2017. The program offers $15,000 to encourage undergraduate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors and post-baccalaureate students holding STEM degrees to earn a teaching credential and commit to teach in high-need school districts. Supported by the National Science Foundation, the program is in its fifth year. The scholarship is available to NAUTeach undergraduate students and Master of Arts Teaching Science with Certification (MAT-S) graduate students during their final year of coursework. Since its inception, 60 students have received the award and have been deemed Noyce Fellows. After graduation, fellows participate in an induction program for support during their first years of teaching to promote retention.

  • Tiah Bialik holds her Silver Apple Award
    Tiah Bialik

    NAU Elementary Education and Early Childhood Development major, Tiah Bialik, recently received the Channel 3-Silver Apple Teacher Award, which honors outstanding Arizona teachers. The award was presented on live TV, and broadcast across the state on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Bialik is scheduled to graduate in May 2017.

  • Several undergraduate and graduate students auditioned for the Opera National Council, a home for creative and talented performers from throughout the world. Northern Arizona University affiliates Andrew Surrena, tenor (alumnus), Alan Williams, bass-baritone (undergraduate student), Colette Roberts, soprano (graduate student), Josephyne Santos (undergraduate student) and Rehanna Thelwell (alumna) were all named district champions. They now are auditioning for the regional championship, which will allow them to progress to the national competition.

  • Shawn Malkou recently received the coveted “Silver Play Button” from YouTube. The NAU Lumberjack Scholarship recipient has been building up his family-friendly gaming channel for the last six years—finally surpassing 100,000 subscribers to earn him the award. Malkou’s videos can be viewed online.
