  • Andrew Griffin, director of NAU’s Office of Military and Veteran Affairs, has been appointed by Gov. Jan Brewer to serve on the Arizona Veterans Advisory Council. The nine-member commission provides policy advice to the governor and director of Arizona Department of Veterans’ Service on matters affecting the state’s 600,000 veterans. Griffin will serve a three-year appointment.
  • Nicole Lohman, graduate candidate in the anthropology program, won the Cordell Prize for best student presentation at the Pecos Conference, an annual gathering of Southwestern archeologists. Lohman received a retablo of St. Linda, patroness of Southwestern archaeologists and a $500 check. The Cordell Prize honors the late Linda Cordell, author of the primary textbook on Southwestern Archaeology.
  • James I. Bowie, senior lecturer in sociology, wrote an article for Slate titled “The Southeastern Conference’s Retro Logo Is a Brilliant Work of Modern Design.” The piece examines the effectiveness of the logo of the Southeastern Conference using qualitative analysis and historical context.
