Richard Layton

Richard Gary Layton, former professor of physics and astronomy, died July 27, 2010. He was 74.

Born in Salt Lake City to Lynn and Leone Layton, he was the third of three boys.

Dr. Layton was a life-long learner and teacher by profession and nature. He retired from NAU on Dec. 17, 1999, ending a 30-year career at NAU that impacted countless students who took his classes.

His greatest joy and life’s work was his family. Devoted to scouting, Dr. Layton also mentored young men throughout his life, and his abilities on the banjo and kazooga horn endeared him to many.

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his life was marked by service to God and his fellow man. He served a mission to the Central States from 1956-58 and continued to serve faithfully ever since.

Dr. Layton is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Susan; brother Robert (Betty); children Catherine (Brian), Paul (D’Net) and Spencer; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday at LDS Century Garden Ward in Mesa. Bunker’s Garden Chapel handled arrangements.
