- Computer information systems students Chris Schild, Oswin Verdy, Matthew Bartush, Ayden Pulido and
NAU group at the AIS Student Chapter Leadership Conference Mark Rubio won the software innovation challenge at the AIS Student Chapter Leadership Conference in Philadelphia. David Weber was the team’s faculty adviser.
- The Northern Arizona University men’s basketball, women’s basketball and men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams had a combined total of 36 Big Sky Winter All-Academic award winners. To be eligible for this award, student-athletes must have participated in at least half the team’s competitions, achieved a minimum 3.2 GPA in their most recent term and completed at least one term at their Big Sky institution. The total list of winners is below.
- Men’s basketball: Luke Avdalovic, Brooks DeBisschop, Nik Mains and Cameron Shelton
- Women’s basketball: Jacey Bailey, Peyton Carroll, Brianna Lehew, Caitlin Malvar, Kaleigh Paplow, Khiarica Rasheed, Regan Schenck and Tate Tsingine
- Men’s indoor track and field: Geordie Beamish, Cade Burks, Kevin Cooney, Tyler Day, Blaise Ferro, Christopher Grant, Kyle Havriliak, Parker Joens, Jacob Kaufman, Ryan Lanley and Ryan Raff
- Women’s indoor track and field: Jesselyn Bries, Maggie Carruth, Alexa Dragone, Pipi Eitel, Jenna Figueroa, Jada Jackson, Jasmine Malone, Jenna McCaffrey, Helena McLeod, Shannon Molvin, Dana Padget, Delaney Rasmussen and Emma Sjolund
- Athletic training students Kristin Wright, Sierra Bisso, Julie Drapkin and Antonio Carrasco won the Student Quiz Bowl competition hosted by The National Athletic Training Association (NATA). The annual event is played like Jeopardy with 20-30 competing teams. The team will now travel to the national NATA conference to compete against the top 10 teams.
- A number of students and some faculty represented the Department of Anthropology at the Society for Applied Anthropology meeting “Engaging Change in Turbulent Times” in Portland, Oregon.
- Graduate students Natasha Coté, Teahlyn Crow, Shaylynne Shuler, Hannah Skalleberg, Sheryl Nelson and Bailey Kohlbeck were joined by undergraduate Omar Gomez in presenting their research.
- Professor Michelle Parsons presented “What Makes a Reflective Social Institution,” associate professor and editor of Practicing Anthropology Lisa Hardy spoke with attendees at a Meet the Editor event and department member Fritz Lampe coached students, graduates and early career professionals on developing their professional identity as practitioners at the National Association for Practicing Anthropology at the Careers Spotlight.
- Master’s student Evalyne Lengarwa/Sangari’s documentary “Maasai Remix” premiered at the International Student Pavilion on April 5. The film focuses on how three Parakuyo Maasai individuals are creating solutions to problems facing their community by drawing strength from local traditions, modifying them when necessary and melding them with new resources such as Western schooling and international political movements. The event featured a Q&A session with producers and directors.
NAMA committee members - Students in the Northern Arizona Merchandising Association Sam Kotowski, Ashley Kritzstein, Paola Felipe, Kyla Todaro, Toni McCarty, Dharnee Massey, Marcela Delgado, Joe Andersen, Taylor Harvey and Laura Edgerton presented Flagstaff in Bloom: Spring Fashion Show this month. The committee was responsible for all aspects of the fashion show including identifying retailers and securing merchandise, reserving Ashurst auditorium to host the event, decoration and prep, interviewing and selecting models, ticket sales and marketing and day-of event management such as lighting and music. The event featured fashions from local retailers and included a segment that highlighted student designers displaying creations that ranged from streetwear to bridal gowns.
