February is Black History Month

Black History Month

NAU’s Black Student Union, Multicultural Student Center and the Black History Month Committee are hosting campus events throughout February to celebrate Black History Month. The purpose of the program, titled “Unsung Heroes: Black History beyond Martin, Malcolm and Rosa,” is to celebrate the history, culture and progression of the African-American culture and its visionaries.

The celebration will feature 14 events including a film series, a performance by Step Afrika! professional stepping company and a presentation by international journalist and social and political activist Jeff Johnson.

Black History Month was officially recognized for the first time by President Gerald Ford in 1976. Since then, the honoring and celebration of the month has been a nationwide tradition.
