The first Diversity and Equity Awards Dinner on March 28 not only celebrated the university’s strides toward diversity, it celebrated taking even bigger steps in the future.
Awards and scholarships were presented by the Commission on the Status of Women, the Commission on Native Americans, and the Commission on Ethnic Diversity to people and programs creating a diverse campus climate.
“It is important to celebrate and get together with dominant groups working to bring diversity to the university so we understand the successes of each and work together toward a larger, common goal,” President John Haeger said in his opening remarks.
Haeger sponsored the dinner and said he would soon appoint members from the commissions to an Advisory Council on Diversity and Equity, where they could advise the university on new initiatives and integrate their approach in improving diversity, especially among students and faculty.
David Camacho, special assistant to the president, also spoke to the group at the du Bois Center Ballroom.
“As diversity issues become more complex and deeply integrated into our culture, the university needs to be well positioned to educate and serve this dynamic environment,” Camacho said. “Tonight we honor the people whose work and dedication has made a big impact in accomplishing our goals.”
