Lon Owen named director of Class Linked Academic Support

Lon Owen, a long-time professor of biological sciences at Northern Arizona University, has been appointed as the first director of Class Linked Academic Support, a new program that is part of the university’s efforts to increase student success and retention.

The program offers peer assistance to undergraduates in courses that have proved difficult for students in the past.

New VP of administration to join NAU

The assistant vice president for Business and Finance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will join Northern Arizona University as the new vice president for Administration and Finance beginning March 13.

Kathe Munz Shinham will oversee the university’s business functions, including Human Resources, Capital Assets, police, parking and financial services.

She will replace Rich Bowen, who has served as interim vice president since fall 2004.

Joe Lingerfelt, former math professor, dies at 70

Joe Lingerfelt, who taught math at Northern Arizona University for 28 years, died Dec. 30. He was 70.

Early in his career, Lingerfelt worked for Jet Propulsion Laboratories and NASA on the Apollo Space Launches and was an innovator in design of the Lunar Rover Vehicle. He taught physics at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. from 1961 until 1970 when he moved to Flagstaff to teach mathematics at NAU. Monica Brown wins children’s literature award

Monica Brown, associate professor of English and co-chair of the Commission for Ethnic Diversity, has been awarded the Américas Books Award for Children’s Literature for her picture book, My Name Is Celia/Me Llamo Celia, illustrated by Rafael López.
