Robert Chavez, center, and Dave Corona, both from Capital Assets, helped suit up the 20-foot Louie the Lumberjack statue outside the NAU Skydome today in his own custom-fitted Cardinals jersey.

The Cardinals’ Biggest Fan

Louie the Lumberjack gets into the Cardinals spirit as the NFL team’s training camp kicks off on Saturday.

Louie is donning massive amounts of Cards colors to join fans in cheering on the former NFC champs to another exciting season. At 20-feet tall, Louie is head-and-shoulders above the crowds at Cardinals practices as he stands in front of NAU’s Walkup Skydome.

Measuring Louie for a custom-made jersey required Robert Chavez, a director for NAU’s Capital Assets, and Dave Corona, equipment operator, to break out the measuring tape and climb aboard a cherry picker. Local businesses Red Thread and the Print Raven fashioned the jersey out of 12 yards of Cardinals’ red emblazoned with the team’s official logo.

The Arizona Cardinals arrive at Northern Arizona University on Friday to start their 21st training camp in Flagstaff.

A press conference with Coach Ken Whisenhunt is scheduled for about 4:15 p.m. Friday on south campus, and NAU President John Haeger will be on hand to welcome the coach and his team. Training camp is set to kick off Saturday afternoon at 3:15 on the practice fields east of NAU’s Walkup Skydome.

Recently called the best in the NFL by Clark Judge of CBS Sports.com, Cardinals training camp practices and parking are free and open to the public.

The Cardinals will host a special Red & White outdoor practice from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.

The practice will be preceded by a full-team autograph session from 8:45 to 9:10 a.m.

A pair of night practices also are scheduled for the Cardinals from 7:05 to 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, and Wednesday, Aug.18, at Coconino High School in Flagstaff.
