Andrew Chavez, a 20-year-old Northern Arizona University student from Goodyear, Ariz., died June 19, 2008.
Mr. Chavez was in his second year at NAU, studying parks and recreation management, business management and music. He is a graduate of Cesar Chavez High School in the Valley, where he won a 5A state championship in wrestling. He also played high school football.
Mr. Chavez is survived by his parents, Jerry and Nichol Chavez of Goodyear; a brother, Zachary; grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral Mass and celebration of life were held in the Phoenix area.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to a scholarship fund in Mr. Chavez’s name that will allow underprivileged students to pursue their goals through sports and music. The scholarship is at Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, #493221-04.
